Two Schools, One Building

NYC school disparity investigation

Roughly half of New York city schools now share a building — one in the Bronx is split between nine schools. A Daily News analysis of city and state Department of Education data from the 2013-14 school year examined the disparities between co-located schools and found significant gaps in test scores, graduation rates, demographic makeup and wealth.

Decriminalizing The Minor Offenses

Analysis of NYPD summonses

The New York City Council is working on a proposal that would make some of the most common criminal court summonses civil charges instead. Daily News analyzed data on summonses issued by the NYPD between January 2011 and June 2014 and found that the proposal would decriminalize 42% of the summonses, while some precincts already have high dismissal rates, a proof of "legal insufficiency".

Barred From Home

Pulitzer-winning Investigation on NYPD's Abuse of Nuisance Abatement Law

Every year, many New Yorkers are removed from their dwellings for crimes they were never found guilty, without even facing trial or consulting a lawyer. NYPD has been abusing an obscure law called "nuisance abatement" to evict hundreds of people from their homes. The Daily News and ProPublica identified 297 people who were either barred from homes or gave up their tenancy to settle actions filed during 2013 and the first half of 2014.

Trump Wins Big With Military

Analysis of primary results on military bases

To get a sense of who members of the armed services and their families would like to see as their next commander-in-chief, the Daily News conducted an analysis of U.S. Census and election data to identify voting precincts where at least half the adults are in the armed forces. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton came out as the clear front-runners for their parties in these precincts, which cover 13 military bases in nine states, mirroring their standing among voters nationally.

What Lies Beneath

NYC public housing lead paint investigation

In 1960, New York City banned lead paint from residential housing. Today across the city, the city Housing Authority estimates there are still 55,000 aging apartments that likely contain lead paint, including 10,000 where children under six live.

Invisible Violations

NYC day care provider safty investigation

Getting a clear and total picture of New York City day care provider’s safety records can be like negotiating a maze, and documents related to license suspensions and revocations aren’t available at all on-line. The News used the Freedom of Information law to obtain more than 800 pages of those documents to give parents a clear picture of some of the more egregious offenders.
